I can highly recommend a quick boost of your immune system with jamu juice. A healthy immune system can help to defeat invading pathogens such as virus’s as well as bacteria. Science tells us that our bodies are continually generating immune cells. This decreases with age especially T cells which help in the fight against pneumonia and other respiratory illness.
Stress decreases your immune cells as does a less than healthy diet and inactivity. Currently, it seems that people’s stress levels amidst this Covid-19 shenanigans are through the roof! I spent a number of years in Indonesia hence the Jamu connection plus I love the stuff. For those who are not quite sure about it read on to find out why I recommend a quick boost to your immune system with jamu juice.
The word Jamu just means medicine in Indonesian. There are endless kinds of Jamu for all kinds of ailments. Traditionally it’s made of roots, barks, flowers, leaves and herbs. Sometimes fruit is added for Jamu that’s to drink straight away and not stored. I do that sometimes for breakfast and add apple and carrot.
In Indonesia, it comes usually as a green or yellow liquid.
It’s used as a prevention against illness mostly as opposed to medicine to cure. Hence it is taken daily.
You may want to try my Jamu recipe based on the Indonesian health tonic as it contains amongst other things:
Turmeric – which contains zinc, iron and potassium to name but three
Ginger – contains gingerol which is seen as an anti oxidant, vitamin 6 and B3, zinc, magnesium and other minerals
Kratchai – has potential antiviral properties which scientists are currently studying. This may not be available where you are, so just omit it.
The basic ingredients are below and everything goes through the slow pressed juicer. You can, of course, whizz it up in the blender.
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
3 cloves Garlic
50g Krachai (omit if it’s not available where you are)
1/2 tsp Coconut oil
1/2 tsp Black pepper
200mls juice of Tamarind (omit if it’s not available where you are)
You’ll most probably already know the health benefits of each of those ingredients. Omit garlic for those vegans who don’t have it in their diet. In fact, you can fiddle around with ingredients as long as the basic ginger and turmeric are still there.
Tradition suggests that one should make Jamu with your heart as it’s like drinking a prayer for your health. So make it with love so you can feel the love too. ❤️
Other tips to ensure your immune system is at optimal working levels, it’s essential to:
1) Eat healthily and ensure your diet contains micronutrients essential for optimum health such as selenium, iron, copper, folic acid, zinc and vitamins A, B6, C, and E.
2) Take daily exercise which improves cardiovascular health thus leading to a more robust immune system.
3) Stop bloody stressing! Scientists are currently exploring the effects of stress on the immune system. The body’s stress response suppresses the immune system…. so those people freaking out about Covid-19 are not helping themselves!
So do it now. Give yourself a quick boost of your immune system with jamu juice.
Let me know in the comments below if you have tried this or any other turmeric/ginger combo.
